Icing Cookies

These were a gift! Yum!

Pictures of them are everywhere in blog world, Pinterest, etc.  Those little animal cookies with hard icing that doesn't come off.  They are my favorite.  The older the recipe the better.
We used to have a little bakery here in the town where I live that made them every day, not just for special holidays.  You know, the kind of bakery in a very small town, where the little older lady gets up at the crack of dawn and goes downtown to her little old store and cooks all morning until you can smell it outside.  When she finally opens the doors, you go inside.  The bell hanging on the door jingles so she hears you so she can come up front from the tasks she still working on in the back.   As you gaze into those glass front wooden cases, it's hard to decide 'today' which kind of bread you'll buy and which decorated cookie you'll get and start eating before you get out the door.  This use to be my breakfast of choice way, over the fried fruit pies or cinnamon rolls she had.  Well, ok, some days those cinnamon rolls won over.  On those days I'd say, "I'd like one of those without nuts please, and from the middle."  (I like soft inside edges not crispy outside.  Everyone in my family knows that.  Here's the good thing about that.  My family all love the edges).  So on those days I'd also say "would you heat it up please."  Whatever I chose, I ate it in the car on the way to work.  Just thinking about them I can almost taste them.
That little bakery, with the little older lady baker, Ms Cowey, has been closed for years.  If she were open today, I'd pick 2 of every kind of cookie, rabbit, egg, duck and chick.  One of each for me and one of each for Baby Gray.   I'd probably let him eat two.  I'd probably eat them all.
Mark 16
New International Version (NIV)

Jesus Has Risen

16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

The Butcher, the Baker.....

Luke 4:4
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ”

About a month ago I put out a request on Facebook to see if any of my friends knew anyone who made homemade bread and who might be willing to show me how.  I got a couple of suggestions but I got phone call from a friend with a solid offer to show me how to make sweet (cinnamon) rolls.  I immediately took her up on it and we set a date!
That date was last Friday.  I asked if I could bring anything along.  The only things she suggested were pecans (uh, no), raisins (uh, a BIG no) and pans.  The pans are what I took.
When I arrived we perused the recipe (which she had read over numerous times already since it had been quite some time since she had made some).
She already had just about everything set out for this event including bowls, measuring cups and spoons, ingredients, etc.  So fun.
We set about our task, each making their own "batch".
First up, bowl of liquid ingredients including milk, sugar, salt, butter;
Second bowl, warm water, yeast, sugar.
When the yeast is ready it's sort of frothy.
Beat 2 eggs, mix/knead 7 cups flour in slowly, till no longer sticky.
This was the fun part.  Kneading!
Linda's on the left, mine on the right.
Put in bowl to rise in a warm place, cover; resting, rising.
After a couple of hours, dough doubles, punch it down.
Rise again...roll out dough, spread with softened butter (a lot); cover with brown sugar (a lot).
When you think you have enough butter, add more; when you think you have enough brown sugar, add more.

Linda added chopped pecans to hers.
Roll up dough, cut in slices, grease pan, line pan with rolls,

Let rise, bake at 400 degrees 12-15 minutes
Icing is made of powdered sugar, tbs spoon butter, vanilla, milk or half and half (yum).
Viola!

Ice while hot then EAT!!

Oh my, heaven!
I'm hoping the friend I found who does make bread will call and make a date with me.  I'm sitting by the phone.
Till next time...
